Probiotics for Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

There are a range of reasons why I would suggest to take a probiotic supplement in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, more specifically, a strain of probiotics called L. fermentum CECT5716 found in the product called Qiara.

L. fermentum is a single probiotic strain that has extensive research and originally isolated from human breastmilk, reproduced via fermentation and then freeze dried. This specific strain of probiotic has been shown to relieve symptoms and reduce occurrence of mild mastitis is able to transfer to the breast tissue into breastmilk benefiting both mother and infant. We know that breastmilk contains a wide variety of prebiotics and probiotics which continue the development of the infant microbiome which is established during pregnancy and at birth, the probiotic L. fermentum can provide additional support to the breast milk and gut microbiome of mum and infant while supporting optimal digestive system functions. This is especially important for mothers and their breastfed baby where antibiotics have been required.

Factors influencing the microbiome in pregnancy and breastfeeding:

• Gestational Age • Delivery mode • Parity • Full/Pre-term • Antibiotics and other prescribed meds • Biological Sex of baby • Health History • Diet, Nutrition and BMI • Pre and Probiotics • Pumping

• Membrane integrity (gut, oral, breast, reproductive) • Lactation Stage • Smoking & other Environmental toxins • Geographical location • Ethnicity • Mastitis or other infection

The use of these probiotics while breastfeeeding measn that it passes through to baby, and can be very beneficial when experiencing colic or reflux symptoms, constipation or diarrhoea. Research also supports probitoic use for mothers and babies who experinced a Caesarean section birth to reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal issues. This same research supports the development and maturation of gut, respiratory and immune function and restore good bacteria during and after antibiotics.
